Color Mixing Exploring Blue and Yellow

          One of our ongoing projects this semester is focusing on color mixing and the different colors we can make starting with the primary colors. The students started exploring with yellow and blue paint. They noticed when they mixed blue and yellow paint together, they made the color green. The students were excited to see how the colors changed as they mixed them together. They started to see the different shades of green as they mixed more blue and less yellow, or more yellow less blue.  They concluded “After mixing blue and yellow to make green, add more blue to make teal.”

 

Hadi explores mixing yellow and blue together. “Blue and yellow make green.” Teacher: “I noticed you added more yellow than blue onto your paper, what happens when you add more yellow to green? Hadi: “It made it a lighter green.”

 

Jenna: Explored with the blue and yellow paint. She put a lot of blue on her paper and a little yellow on the side making a light green color. 

 

Max first mixed yellow and blue to make green. Then he continued adding more yellow to make a lighter green. After having made the color green, he added more blue in different spots to making the color teal. 

      The students will continue to explore color mixing with all the primary colors to make secondary colors. Identifying different shades/tones will be introduced as the students continue to explore color mixing with white and black.

Volume Investigation

At the beginning of the semester the children spent a good deal of time engaged with the sand table. During their exploration of the sand table I began to notice the children take an interest in filling objects. They would slowly fill the objects one scoop of sand at a time.

“23, 24….I think it’s not full.” –Leila

 

The children seem to be questioning how full they can fill objects. This has led me to focus my project work on exploring volume. Last week we moved from filling objects with sand to filling objects with water.

“1, 2, 3 scoops.” – Cash

I am very curious to see where this exploration of volume will take us this semester!

Exploring Our Studio

We don't know if you've noticed yet, but our Studio is almost finished.  We have made a lot of changes and added several thoughtful materials that will engage children and provoke new ideas to explore.  

Today we investigated the Studio and materials in small groups.  The children identified items that caught their interest and discussed what they could create or work with.

There are areas in the Studio that focus on light, wire, clay, natural materials, construction, and tiles.  There are materials for the children to work with and also pieces that can act as inspiration for exploration. 

Please walk through with your child and family to become familiar with our materials and discover the Reggio Emilia inspired way of thinking.

Exploring a New Idea - Rocket ships

The children discussed the idea of rocket ships while painting on the easel.  Several of the children talked about a rocket ship was, where they see it, and what it looks like.  

As a whole group we looked at pictures of rocketships and discussed further what we saw.  They had a lot of interesting ideas of what they knew and we wrote down all their important thoughts. 

During Ongoing Investigation time the children acted out their thoughts and ideas together.  They brought together a lot of chairs to represent the rocket ship and brought over materials that they thought were inside a rocket ship.  Some of which included, food, babies, seat belts, binoculars, and blankets.

The children worked together to sort through their ideas of what was real and fantasy.  This exploration brought out a lot of new vocabulary and exchanging of ideas.  

We will continue to explore the ideas of rocket ships by watching videos of rocket ships taking off, looking inside of some, and building them out of blocks.  

    We want to narrow down their ideas and see what it is about      rocket ships that interest them so much.  

Through these extensions we will see these emerge.
