Investigation: Painting Techniques
Next, we
examined sponge paintings made by various artists using magnifying lenses. We talked about how the artists might have
used their sponges while they were painting.
We also talked about whether the artist used a star-shaped,
square-shaped, or circle-shaped sponge.
“Look! This
matches the circle sponge! That means somebody used this.” –Holly
Theo used
the square sponge and rubbed it across the paper using a back and forth motion.
“I see another
picture!” –Isabel
While
looking at the painting through the magnifying lens, Isabel said she could see
another picture.
Madeana
showed Ms. Telners how she thought the artist who made the painting used their
sponge.
Based on the
children’s interest in sponge painting, we will be making our own
representation of one of the sponge paintings that we examined. The children will be creating a plan and
following it in order to make their sponge paintings. This will be an ongoing project that we will
be working on.
